Five ways small shops cut shipping costs

Efficient fulfillment shelves keeping a small shop's shipping lean

Delivery is often a small shop's second-biggest cost after stock. The good news: most of that spend is in the packaging and the schedule, both of which you control. These five moves cut real money without slowing a single parcel.

1. Consolidate pickups

One daily pickup beats five ad-hoc ones. A fixed courier slot lowers the per-parcel rate and removes the chaos of flagging down drivers mid-day.

2. Right-size every box

Oversized boxes pay dimensional weight for shipping air. Keep three box sizes on hand and match the smallest that fits — the savings compound fast.

3. Ship off-peak where you can

Non-urgent restocks and returns ride cheaper on standard windows. Reserve rush rates for the orders that truly need them.

4. Pre-print and pre-sort

Labels on, postcodes grouped, fragile flagged. A courier who loads in two minutes instead of ten keeps your route — and your rate — tight.

5. Review the invoice monthly

Surcharges creep. A ten-minute monthly review of weights, zones, and re-attempts catches the drift before it becomes a habit.

  • Ask about business volume rates once you pass 40 parcels a month.
  • Standardize box sizes before negotiating any contract.
  • Track failed-delivery rates — re-attempts are the silent budget killer.
